Role Models matter

For girls from ethnic minority backgrounds to succeed academically and personally, they must have access to black female role models in UK schools.

Black girls are generally closing gaps in GCSE performance, according to recent figures on the academic performance of Black female students in the UK. Disparities still exist, though. Black Caribbean pupils, particularly females, continue to have lower average GCSE scores than students from a number of other ethnic groups, according to data from 2022–2023. Performance discrepancies can have a substantial impact on academic advancement and future opportunity. This emphasises the necessity of a credible support network.

By offering mentorship and a feeling of identity, role models are essential in closing these gaps and motivating students to pursue greater academic and personal goals. Black female role models inspire girls to strive and accomplish great things by being resilient and successful examples. Students who receive this kind of assistance are more likely to feel understood, empowered, and driven, improving their academic performance and self-esteem.

H.E.A.L Workshops

Short sessions over a few weeks

Our sessions take place over several days or weeks, allowing students to progressively develop their knowledge and abilities. Every session is structured to introduce new concepts and methods, beginning with in-depth conversations and continuing through storyboarding, screenplay creation, filming, and editing.

In addition to promoting learning, this format allows for complex storylines and creative production methods. Sessions can be modified to accommodate specific requirements or time constraints, while still delivering maximum impact.

H.E.A.L Workshops

Intensive 1/2 day Session

Under the direction of experienced facilitators, students immediately delve into conversations about their selected topic during an immersive three-hour session. Students develop a better understanding of their chosen topic’s complexities and impact before deciding on the stories they want to explore further.

Following the discussion, students will collaboratively script short films, bringing their insights and perspectives to life through storytelling. The session culminates in the hands-on experience of filming their scripts, providing students with immediate, tangible results and a deepened understanding of the topic through creative expression.

Working with Youth Offending Teams

Keeping it Real with Young Offenders

Reports by the Local Government Association (The Commission on Young Lives) suggest a rise in both direct and indirect gang affiliations among young females. Girls in gangs can experience high levels of vulnerability and can often be subject to exploitation and violence. According to recent insights, these young women frequently face challenges such as mental health issues, trauma, and limited access to support systems that can help them navigate away from gang life.

Support initiatives and targeted interventions are a high-impact method to address these challenges, emphasizing trauma-informed and gender-specific care to prevent escalation and provide meaningful alternatives for girls.

Having been involved in gangs himself, Fredi knows the challenges and temptations that come with that lifestyle. But instead of being defined by his past, he turned his life around, carving out a successful career in films and acting.

Today, he uses his experiences to inspire young people, showing them that it’s possible to break free from a cycle of crime and violence. Through his work, Fredi empowers youth to channel their energy into creativity and positive pursuits, offering them hope and practical guidance to turn their lives around, just like he did.
